After a short EasyJet flight and not so short bus & subway ride from Budapest airport into the city center (ok, so we went the wrong direction on the bus for a while....you try to read Hungarian!) we arrived Thursday evening to our hotel smack in the middle of a nice part of town. We explored the city and river bank a bit.....stopped for a late snack/lunch and ice cold Dreher. Then we walked on and checked out a few of the sites in my Budapest guidebook (purchased at Gatwick airport that very morning) and found a great traditional Hungarian restaurant. The goulash was awesome, as was the Hungarian white wine!
Friday turned out to be a little cold and gloomy, but we still got out and explored. A nice long walk along the river (past the Parliament bldg, below) and up to a picnic on Margaret Island. It's the largest park in Budapest, situated on an island in the middle of the river. Not quite as....um...well maintained as Hyde Park, but still really pretty. We saw a variety of birds and some crazy-huge rabbits at a petting zoo on the island. After about 10 miles of walking (I'm not kidding) we met up with Anna, her fiance and a few of her friends for a nice dinner at the restaurant that would be catering the wedding reception. It was great to catch up with Anna and Dave - and they didn't seem nervous at all!
Saturday, the day of the wedding, we actually had a lot of time to sight see before the wedding. It turned out to be a gorgeous, sunny, warm day and we made the most of it! We walked up to the top of the mountain on the Buda side of the river to the "Castle District" and did a speed tour of the Royal Palace art museum. We could not pass up the weather, and had a picnic outside the Mattias Church. About time to head back to get ready for the wedding.....
And the wedding was so much fun! Anna looked gorgeous! Everything went exactly as planned and we made friends with some of the Hungarian swimmers (all swimmers are the same...no matter what country they come from). There was a little dancing, lots of food, and even more shots of Palinka. Ggrrrr Palinka. I remembered why I do not take shots anymore, but it was tradition so we had to! A great evening!
Sunday, back to London. Not much exciting to say about Sunday (reference Palinka shots from the night before).
Here are only a few of the many photos we took. Budapest really is a beautiful city - similar to Prague and Vienna (but maybe not as well maintained)
