We took a four day road trip to the Southwest of England - the only piece of this island that we haven't explored yet. (I take that back, we need to do the Scottish Highlands, but it's too cold already!). The counties of Devon and Cornwall are known for their beautiful coastline, two great national parks, and organic farming - the freshest and best quality meat and cheese you can find, almost anywhere in Europe.
Apparently the thing to do is to rent a "self-catering cottage" because there were thousands of them online. It took some stressing to find one that was nice, but not super expensive and we were really happy with the one we booked! A semi-retired couple from London had moved out to the countryside a few years ago, and they built an "eco cottage" duplex on their property. i.e. sustainable, wood-fire heating, solar panels, low-flow plumbing and all waste recycled. Even better for us, it was super quiet and brand spankin new. Our closest neighbors were the pigs and geese the couple is raising. (see pics below - the piggies are surprisingly funny and cute!)
We basically spent the weekend driving and exploring the coast, Stonehenge, Wells Cathedral, small villages and farm country. We had some great meals out and at our cottage, thanks to our visits to farm shops for fresh supplies! What a wonderful long weekend relaxing at our cottage and pubs!
