USA Trip Part 1: A Boston Wedding Weekend

Kent and I took a long trip back home from mid-May to early June - with stops in several states visiting family and friends, a week or so of customer visits for me, and generally soaking up the US of A!! We did so much on this trip and saw so many different people (including my adorable niece and brand new nephew!) that I'm breaking it in to several different posts.....

The trip began for me in New York City with a couple of intense days of work in Manhattan...hitting the streets and selling the vodka. :-) I stayed with my friend Sarah from high school and her husband Steve at their cute apartment in Brooklyn - such great hosts and it was wonderful to really have some time to catch up this visit. Kent joined me on the last night in NY. We even spent some time in Sarah and Steven's local pub" called the Double Windsor - how English! Kent felt right at home, and was even happier cause they had good American microbrews.

Friday of that week we hopped the train up to Boston for the wedding of a friend from Oxford. Yep, we took a train in the USA! It was definitely a better option than flying. No hassle in security, no overweight bags to worry about, spacious seats and really pretty New England countryside. We arrived in Boston in the afternoon and met up with two other Oxford couples who came over from London. Kent found us an awesome townhouse in Back Bay, and it worked out perfectly. Lots of space and we could walk everywhere. We all checked out Boston and enjoyed the sunshine and cool breeze with a few beers at a waterfront bar.


Saturday morning started with a nice jog around Boston Common and then frantically getting dressed for the wedding. We took a short train to the suburbs, as the wedding was at the groom's parents house - which happened to be a pre-Revolutionary War farmhouse! The festivities were outside in their awesome yard, but we did get to take a tour of the house and they have done a great job restoring and maintaining it.

The style of the wedding was very relaxed - an "English Garden Party". The bride and groom had spent months scouring garage and estate sales for antique china, silverware, tablecloths, etc. Everything looked great - wonderfully mismatched. Ben, the groom, is quite the beer aficionado (something him and Kent bonded over) and there was even a keg of Dogfishhead for the wedding! One of my favorite touches was the antique typewriter that we used to write our guestbook notes. It was fun, but I just have to say that I am thankful for the invention of the computer, including the backspace and spell check!

We had a great afternoon celebrating Ben & Jen's wedding - and really enjoyed Boston!
